The first trimester can be rough. REALLY rough. There are so many changes going on in your body and your emotions are all over the place.
On one hand you’re ecstatic, so excited and eager to soak up every milestone.
On the other hand, you’re exhausted, miserable, nervous and worried.
It can be really difficult to handle all of the changes going on, so here is my pregnancy FIRST TRIMESTER Survival Guide:
1. GET PREPARED
- First things first, lets make sure you know what kind of insurance coverage you have! Call your insurance provider and get all of the details on what is covered, what isn’t, what your deductibles will be, and what steps you need to take next.
- Next, you need to choose an OB-GYN if you don’t have one already.
- Now for the fun part, start thinking of how you want to announce! There are SO MANY fun ways to announce your pregnancy, so talk it over with your significant other and decide on a timeline you both feel comfortable with.
Then, scour the internet for inspiration and decide on an announcement! It’s good to be prepared ahead of time so you are able to plan accordingly, order any materials you need, book any photographers, etc.
- TAKE WEEKLY PHOTOS! This one is huge because time really does fly by. It may not feel like it early on, but I promise you will be SO happy you documented each week. It can feel tedious, but set a reminder in your phone each week and make it happen. Trust me.
2. MANAGING EXHAUSTION
Growing a human takes a lot of energy, and you WILL be feeling it in these early months!
Exhaustion is an understatement, and you are going to need all of the rest you can get! Your body is in overdrive as this little bean is growing every single day.
As your baby grows throughout your pregnancy, it requires a TON of energy, so expect to feel tired. Really tired.
Exercise can help bring you some extra energy, but depending on how you are feeling (ie: nauseous) you may not feel up to a full on workout session.
Always consult with your doctor for their recommendations on safe levels of exercise, but a nice brisk walk can help a lot.
Also, consider getting a Pregnancy Pillow. Once you start showing, it can be tough to get comfortable. A pregnancy pillow helps SO MUCH with getting the rest that you so desperately NEED.
3. MORNING SICKNESS
Oh “morning” sickness…aka ALL DAY SICKNESS for most.
This was by far the part of pregnancy that I hated THE MOST.
If you can get through this part, you can get through anything in my opinion.
Everyone’s level of nausea varies, so if you are one of the lucky few that doesn’t experience any nausea or vomiting, then I hate you. Just kidding (kind of) kudos to you!
If you are one of the UN-LUCKY ones who has EXTREME nausea and vomiting (or worse, hyperemesis graviderum) I feel your pain.
Trust me when I say, it will get better! You can do this, just take it one day at a time.
For mild to moderate nausea: try my favorite Preggy Pops, Ginger candy, Ginger tea, try using a Sea Band, or talk to your doctor about possibly taking an antacid such as Zantac or Tums to help settle your stomach.
For those of you (like me) where NONE of these remedies help at all, you may need to talk to your doctor about taking an anti-nausea medication such as Unisom or Zofran.
4. USE A PREGNANCY JOURNAL
Pregnancy is a magical period in your life. It may not FEEL very magical yet, but I promise, it is.
Once it’s all over, you will most likely miss it.
In the early months, it can feel like nothing is happening yet, but I assure you, A LOT is changing.
So many fun, little changes happen throughout every stage and it is easy to forget once the snowball effect begins.
Keep a weekly log of any changes (big or small) because it is so fun to look back and see how far you’ve come.
Also, if you are planning on having more children, I guarantee you WILL be racking your brain trying to remember when every small change happened the first time.
It makes it so fun and so easy to remember every stage when you have a weekly log!
